IELTS Writing Feedback: Why More Essays May Not Raise the Band

Writing many essays without focused feedback can repeat the same problems in task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar. Quantity alone does not produce a higher band.

Why students are getting stuck

Writing many essays without focused feedback can repeat the same problems in task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar. Quantity alone does not produce a higher band. The first useful step is to identify the behaviour or missing skill behind the result. A lower mark is evidence, but it does not by itself explain what must change.

What to do this week

After each essay, select one priority such as clearer topic sentences or more accurate complex sentences. Rewrite only the relevant paragraph, compare it with the task requirements and apply the same skill to a fresh prompt.

At the end of the week, use a fresh question or short explanation to check whether the skill transfers. Keep the part that worked and change one part of the routine if the same error returns.

Common mistake: Do not memorise generic introductions or force unusual vocabulary into every sentence. Clarity and control matter more than display.

How a tutor should support the student

A tutor should begin with recent work, ask the student to explain their reasoning and choose practice at the right level. The lesson should end with a clear next task and a way to check it. Parents and students can ask what improved, what remains difficult and what evidence will show progress.
