Computer Science Pseudocode: How to Debug Without Guessing

When pseudocode fails, students often rewrite several lines at once. That hides the original error and creates new ones. Debugging is a controlled process.

Why students are getting stuck

When pseudocode fails, students often rewrite several lines at once. That hides the original error and creates new ones. Debugging is a controlled process. The first useful step is to identify the behaviour or missing skill behind the result. A lower mark is evidence, but it does not by itself explain what must change.

What to do this week

Choose a small test input and trace each variable line by line. Check initial values, loop boundaries and conditions. Change one statement, repeat the same test, then add edge cases such as zero items or the maximum allowed value.

At the end of the week, use a fresh question or short explanation to check whether the skill transfers. Keep the part that worked and change one part of the routine if the same error returns.

Common mistake: Do not test only the example that already works. A good test set includes normal, boundary and invalid cases where relevant.

How a tutor should support the student

A tutor should begin with recent work, ask the student to explain their reasoning and choose practice at the right level. The lesson should end with a clear next task and a way to check it. Parents and students can ask what improved, what remains difficult and what evidence will show progress.
