Why Students Misread Maths Word Problems—and How to Improve

A student may know the calculation but still misread the situation, select the wrong information or answer a different question. Word problems combine reading, modelling and arithmetic.

Why students are getting stuck

A student may know the calculation but still misread the situation, select the wrong information or answer a different question. Word problems combine reading, modelling and arithmetic. The first useful step is to identify the behaviour or missing skill behind the result. A lower mark is evidence, but it does not by itself explain what must change.

What to do this week

Read once without calculating. Circle the requested quantity, list the known values with units and sketch the relationship. Predict whether the answer should be larger or smaller before choosing an operation.

At the end of the week, use a fresh question or short explanation to check whether the skill transfers. Keep the part that worked and change one part of the routine if the same error returns.

Common mistake: Do not search for a keyword such as “more” and automatically add. The same word can appear in different mathematical relationships.

How a tutor should support the student

A tutor should begin with recent work, ask the student to explain their reasoning and choose practice at the right level. The lesson should end with a clear next task and a way to check it. Parents and students can ask what improved, what remains difficult and what evidence will show progress.
