AI Hallucinations in Schoolwork: How to Check an Answer

Generative AI can produce confident statements, invented references and incorrect calculations. A polished response is not evidence that the information is true.

Why students are getting stuck

Generative AI can produce confident statements, invented references and incorrect calculations. A polished response is not evidence that the information is true. The first useful step is to identify the behaviour or missing skill behind the result. A lower mark is evidence, but it does not by itself explain what must change.

What to do this week

Underline every factual claim, formula and quotation in the generated answer. Verify them against the syllabus, textbook or an official source. Recalculate numerical work and ask whether the explanation fits the question’s command word.

At the end of the week, use a fresh question or short explanation to check whether the skill transfers. Keep the part that worked and change one part of the routine if the same error returns.

Common mistake: Do not use another AI answer as the only verification. Independent sources and human review remain necessary for high-stakes work.

How a tutor should support the student

A tutor should begin with recent work, ask the student to explain their reasoning and choose practice at the right level. The lesson should end with a clear next task and a way to check it. Parents and students can ask what improved, what remains difficult and what evidence will show progress.
